A free fishing day or weekend usually means you may fish without buying a standard sport fishing license for the published dates and waters. Regulations do not disappear.

Michigan. Both weekends waive all fishing license fees for residents and nonresidents on inland and Great Lakes waters; regulations still apply. Iowa. Residents may fish without a license or trout fee on the Free Fishing weekend; other regulations remain. eRegulations lists June 5–7. Do not treat that as a nonresident free pass unless the live Iowa DNR notice says so. Detail: Iowa Fishing License 2026.
Arizona, Oregon, Utah. Arizona lists June 6, 2026—confirm on AZGFD (Arizona). Oregon lists February 14–15, June 6–7, and November 27–28 when a license or tags are not required for the promotional period (Oregon). Utah confirms Saturday, June 6, 2026 for public waterbodies (Utah).
Pattern-based windows (confirm exact dates live). Colorado offers free fishing (no license or Habitat Stamp) on the first full weekend of June. Vermont uses timing cues: Summer Free Fishing Day (second Saturday in June), Winter Free Fishing Day (last Saturday in January), and Free Mentored Fishing Weekend on Labor Day weekend.

Do free fishing days mean I need no license in every state that weekend?
No. Free days are set by each state agency. A Michigan Free Fishing Weekend does not authorize unlicensed fishing in Indiana or Wisconsin that same weekend.
Are stamps and report cards waived on free fishing days?
Not automatically. California report cards and Washington catch record cards can still apply when the base license fee is waived. Oregon’s 2026 free-day notice states license or tags are not required for the promotional period—still re-read the live notice for your dates and species.
Can nonresidents fish on free fishing weekends?

Does Free Fishing Day waive Florida or California pier rules?
